What do the flags on the beach in Spain mean?

Green, yellow and red flags – how to recognize them?

  • Green flag – swimming is permitted, conditions are safe. Perfect weather for swimming.

  • Yellow flag – caution! Swimming is permitted, but conditions are moderately hazardous.

  • Red flag – swimming is strictly prohibited. Entering the water is dangerous and illegal.

Fines for swimming under a red flag – up to 1,500 euros

As the recent case in Fuengirola demonstrates, ignoring a red flag can result in a call to the Local Police and a hefty fine. Emergency responders have the right to call the emergency services if someone fails to comply – this is not only a matter of law, but above all, of life and limb.
